The magical National park The Plitvice lakes – is a system of 16 lakes with numerous waterfalls between them, which are Europe’s most beautiful. This is pure enjoyment for one’s eyes and soul. It is the oldest national park in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia, located in continental and mountainous part of the country near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The water that’s flowing over the limestone created numerous natural dams and basins over the past thousands of years, and all these beautiful turquoise lakes were shaped connecting to each other with countless gorgeous waterfalls. Together with surrounding mountains, rivers and vegetation, the unseen magic was created. The area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park is home to bears, wolves deer, boar, rabbits, badgers and foxes. It is also home for nothing less than 120 different species of bird such as hawks, owls, cuckoos, starlings, kingfishers, wild ducks and herons. As you can see, Plitvice has great biodiversity. Some quick facts:
- The National Park covers a total area of 300 square kilometers;
- The highest point is at 1,280m and the lowest is at 380 meters;
- The largest waterfall is called Veliki Slap and it is 70m tall!
- Trails are going from an altitude of 636m to 503m above sea level.
