Alpine Discovery by MotoTrip

Italy - Austria - Slovenia by motorcycle

This tour is an excellent choice for skilled riders who are a bit short on time, but want to experience some of the best motorcycle riding in Europe.

In total of 9 days (7 riding days), we will ride through famous Italian Dolomites that are considered as 'motorcycle heaven', to the best Austrian roads around 'Grossglockner' and its high alpine road that reaches up to 2.504 meters / 8.215 ft after 48 kilometers pure fun.

Alpine Discovery Tour starts in Venice, Italy; a romantic city we all know from breathtaking scenes of many movies. Therefore, we encourage you to arrive one day earlier and experience all that you've seen: 'get lost' in numerous streets in the centre, take a 'gondola' or 'vaporetto' ride along the Grand Canal while having a typical Italian gelato. Of course, cappuccino and pizza/pasta/lasagnas are a 'must'. Just, please don't try all those action shots from the movie 'Italian Job'.

Starting from Venice, we will ride towards Corvara, a beautiful city and famous ski resort in the middle of the Dolomites. We will adventure many passes like Passo di Gavia, Passo Giau, Passo Rombo etc.; not missing out the famous 'Passo Stelvio' (2.758m/9.048 ft) with its 48 switchbacks on the east side, and another 39 on the west side. That's fun!

Venice (VCE- Marco Polo) is a smaller European, but quite busy airport so be sure to check for direct flights when searching for tickets.

Day by day

Arrival day

1. Arrival day

Your guide will welcome you at the airport in Venice and the transfer to our first hotel will be organized. Depending on the arrival time, you can do some sightseeing after hotel check-in. Venice is a stunning city so you may choose to do a walk in the centre, take a gondola trough the canal or simply rest in your room. In the evening we will enjoy the traditional welcome dinner and we can discuss about the routes, bikes, itinerary etc.

Venice – Corvara (Italy)

2. Venice – Corvara (Italy)

After breakfast, we will have a short briefing as this is our first day riding in the Alps. We will talk about cornering, riding techniques, speed etc. and prepare you for safe and enjoyable rides. As we will be approaching Passo Giau, the surroundings will change and you will notice the typical Dolomites look. As stickers and badges from high mountain passes are collectible, we will stop at every mountain pass for a short briefing and coffee break/souvenir opportunities.

Corvara – Bolzano (Italy)

3. Corvara – Bolzano (Italy)

This will be a short riding day, but definitely one of the nicest. We will continue to ride around the 'Sella' mountain and while reaching Passo Pordoi, the riding will be so good that some of you will want to turn back and repeat the same roads again. We will settle for two nights around Bolzano, in a beautiful alpine style resort.

Bolzano – Passo Stelvio – Bolzano (Italy)

4. Bolzano – Passo Stelvio – Bolzano (Italy)

Today we will do a circle route to reach THE mountain pass in Italy- Passo Stelvio and its 2.758m/9.048 ft highest point. After riding first 48 switchbacks, we will have a rest on the top and continue riding another 37 switchbacks towards Passo Gavia- another beautiful, yet less commercialized mountain pass in Italy. Opposite Passo Stelvio, we will ride narrow, low traffic roads towards Passo Gavia and enjoy the 'wild' side of the Dolomites.

Bolzano (Italy) – Zell am Ziller (Austria)

5. Bolzano (Italy) – Zell am Ziller (Austria)

Before reaching Austria, we still have 'things' to do in Italy. Passo Giovo (2.094m/6870ft) and Passo Rombo (8.232ft) are two spectacular high mountain passes and will lead us into Austria. Welcome to the home of 'Wiener schnitzel' and 'Apfelstrudel'!

Zell am Ziller – Zell am See (Austria)

6. Zell am Ziller – Zell am See (Austria)

Depending on the group preferences, we can split into two riding groups today, or ride together- short ride is only about 100km/60mi; but gives us enough time to visit the highest European waterfalls (and fifth in the world) 'Krimml Waterfalls' with their impressive drop of 380m/1247ft! After the waterfalls, we can take a cable car up to 3.029m/ 9.938ft high Panorama platform called 'Top of Salzburg'.
Second, longer option, is to visit famous 'Eagle's Nest' ('Kehlsteinhaus' in German), the building given to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday as a teahouse for diplomats. It remained unscathed after World War II and since 1952 it has been open to the public as a mountain top restaurant with a truly spectacular view.

Zell am See – Bad Kleinkirchheim (Austria)

7. Zell am See – Bad Kleinkirchheim (Austria)

After breakfast, get ready for Grossglockner High Alpine Road! We will ride through the 'Hohe Tauern' National Park, 48 kilometers of spectacular alpine road, reach the highest elevation of 2.504m/8.215 ft and enjoy a stunning view of the highest peak of Austria (3,798m/12.461ft) and its glacier, the Pasterze. Sounds nice? Let's go!

Bad Kleinkirchheim – Venice

8. Bad Kleinkirchheim – Venice

How does a day without a single mountain pass sound? Not good. So, after spending the morning on typical Austrian local roads, we will enter Slovenia and ride their highest paved road to Mangart Pass. It will be our last mountain pass on this trip, so we will say goodbye to Alpine views and nice curves; and welcome once again the freshness of Adriatic sea and a true city of love, Venice. As always, we'll end this adventure in appropriate way- a special dinner will be waiting for us, and as this is in fact our final dinner, we'll have a good night talk about our impressions!

Flight home

9. Flight home

Depending on the departure time, we'll maybe have more time to spend, so there will be several choices. Of course, your transfers to the airport will be arranged. We really hope you enjoyed the trip, wish you a good flight and of course- see you again!
